Foot in Mouth

Janet M. Gibson

My words are trapped

because the throat has thickened

around the tongue,

and I feel like I swallowed cement.

I try to clear it loose

as the silence becomes awkward

when your eyes show understanding,

and the sparkle ignites the laughter

that dislodges the foot in my mouth.
