Chronesthesia

Janet M. Gibson

Mental time travel is a butterfly
that enjoys a carefree flight
through gardens grown and yet tended.

Its wings pause a moment upon a nearby flower,
long enough for a taste of pollen,
adding a splash of vivid color against a hazy backdrop.

We are forced to respect the fragility,
the delicacy,
and refrain from capture.

Savored a moment, and then it's gone.
We never know from where it came, to where it went,
or why its journey was so brief.
